OVERVIEW
Discovered in 1928, oil and gas have been staples of Lea County’s economy for almost 100 years. Located right in the Permian Basin and the Delaware Basin oilfield, Lea County is part of the most prolific oilfields in the country.
A 2007 study of undiscovered petroleum resources in the Permian Basin Province was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey, which estimated that there is a mean of 41 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered natural gas and a mean of 1.3 billion barrels of undiscovered oil.
